The Remembrance Grove

The Remembrance Grove at Greensprings Natural Cemetery is a place of solace for bereaved parents who have suffered pregnancy and childbirth loss or the loss of a child. Set in a woodlet of locust trees and moss, the Remembrance Grove provides a place for introspection and intimate connection with the natural world. The grove features native plants and stone benches in a mowed clearing among the trees. All are invited to bring a small stone to add to the memorial cairn as a symbol of our shared loss.

The Remembrance Grove is set within the West Meadow burial area on a 130 acre nature preserve, surrounded by 8000 acres of forest land. Visitors are encircled by birdsong, butterflies, native plants and tranquility.

To Visit:

  • Take the first pathway from the West Meadow parking lot and head west. The Remembrance Grove is on your right among the locust trees as the hill slopes down.

To Add to the Memorial Cairn:

  • Stone should be no larger than the palm of your hand

  • Stone should be 100% natural— no cut, machined, polished or painted stones are allowed

Those of us who lose a child (during pregnancy, at birth or after) carry a tremendous sadness. Busy days can help put the pain aside, but a pilgrimage to nature, in any season, brings comfort like nothing else. The Remembrance Grove and Memorial Cairn is a resource for bereaved parents seeking solace and a reminder that sadness is just another flavor of the deep and abiding love we will always feel for the children we’ve lost.
