Donations are not always consistent or large enough to ensure that Greensprings can grow and thrive. Some of our staff and trustees have been drawn to work with Greensprings after the burial of a loved one in the preserve. Some first became interested in the nature conservancy aspect of our work. Regardless of how we discovered Greensprings, we all share a desire to support its vital work and guide the organization through projects, financial challenges, and planning for the future. Because Greensprings is managed as a natural preserve, it is crucial that all planting activity matches the different ecosystems that we maintain across our landscape. The plants on the Ecological Advisory Committee’s approved planting list (right) have been selected because they are native species, provide excellent and diverse wildlife food and habitat, and because they can survive (and even benefit from) the process of mowing.

Greensprings was so much more than just the right thing, environmentally; it fulfills the real and traditional need of human beings to do everything they possibly can for their loved ones, even in death.
When my husband Barry was ill he said he’d like a natural burial but the only place he’d heard of was out west. So when we heard of Greensprings and realized it was near where we used to live we knew it was right.Everyone at Greensprings was so accommodating, making me feel comfortable and giving me such good guidance. It was the first military burial at Greensprings, which was an honor, knowing it could be possible for others too. And after his being hooked up to tubes for 10 weeks it was so nice that Barry’s body didn’t have to be intrusive too — that he didn’t have to be embalmed. Though no one in our family had heard of natural burial, everyone really liked it. They loved covering him with pine boughs — it made it so much more meaningful for us.
Peter and I had been to a burial at Greensprings and as we were leaving Peter said, what a beautiful way to bury someone — to have the option to do it so simply. So when Peter suddenly died I thought — that’s the place. Our family was really appreciative that Greensprings was there for us, that we had a funeral director so willing to work with us — to help us bring his coffin (my brother-in-law made it) to a community chall in our hometown where hundreds came to say farewell, home that night for our private goodbyes, then to church the next day for our last worship together. And then to Greensprings.
Greensprings is part of the whole idea of the cycle of life — including our whole extended family caring for Peter even after death. We were grateful to be a part of it.
When I used to think of my own death I thought cremation would be best. That changed when my first grandchild Frida was born. She lived ten days. During those difficult days her parents decided to bury Frida at Greensprings. They wanted her resting place to be part of the chain of life. The act of laying Frida to rest at Greensprings, the lovely and personal sharing, covering her with evergreen boughs and flowers made me and my husband Kenny change our minds.
When Kenny died in 2009 he was buried in that lovely meadow right next to Frida. And I quickly realized, Grensprings was so much more than the right thing environmentally. It fulfills the real and traditional need of human beings to do everything they possibly can for their loved ones, even in death.
I would like to thank all those who assisted our family in the burial process. You have a lovely process in place and gently guided us through all we needed to do. All who attended were moved by the beauty of the place and we are incredibly grateful for all hard work of those who made a simple burial in such a beautiful spot possible
Thank you for your efforts in making this a truly memorable event and one that I know my sister would have loved and been moved by.
I just wanted to thank you for all the accommodations you made for me yesterday during the service for my sister in law. It was so appreciated and what I thought might be a rather difficult time turned out to be made so easy. Your staff should be commended and please extend my sincere thanks to them.
